Endovenous thermal ablation is used in the removal of varicose veins. It is one of the more popular approaches in vein therapy today, due to its non-invasive nature. Thermal Ablation is today’s alternative to vein ligation, otherwise known as “vein stripping”. Ligation, a method of vein removal, requires that an incision be made below the vein and a wire-like instrument inserted inside. The vein is then grasped and removed. Endovenous thermal ablation, however, is significantly less invasive. It involves the use of a laser or radiofrequency, which will create intense heat local to the varicose vein. The heat causes the faulty vein to seal shut, and eventually causes it to shrink until disappearing entirely. Blood flow is then redirected to healthy veins in the surrounding area. During the procedure patients are given a sedative and a local anesthetic. Ultrasound is employed to guide the catheter through the vein; saline and anesthetic solution is then injected. This is generally done at knee or ankle-level. The ablation process is then ready to be preformed.

Venefit™ is a ground-breaking procedure newly introduced to the field of vein therapy. Venefit™ has been well-received by patients and physicians alike as it causes significantly less bruising and swelling than other methods of vein removal. It utilizes radiofrequency to close and collapse faulty veins in the legs and redistributes blood to healthier veins.
