What is Chiropractic?
Chiropractic is a system of complementary and alternative medicine that focuses on the treatment of the musculoskeletal and nervous systems.
What is a chiropractic adjustment?
The most common procedure performed in chiropractic is spinal manipulation, otherwise known as an “adjustment.” The spine is corrected by pulling, pushing, or twisting the joints and repositioning the discs.
Do chiropractors actually “crack” your back?
During chiropractic adjustments, audible “popping” or “cracking” noises may be heard. This is not the actual cracking of joints. When a chiropractor adjusts a patient’s joints, pressure is applied and a slight separation is created. The tissue surrounding the joints stretches and increases in volume, decreasing the pressure in the surrounding synovial fluid. The fluid then becomes gaseous and bubbles into the surrounding joints. Eventually the bubbles burst and the “popping” or “cracking” sound can be heard. It takes about 30 minutes for gas to be absorbed back into the joint.
